Old regime is also known as Ancien régime or Former regime.

It was basically a political and social system in the kingdom of France from late middle ages around 15th century which was before 1789.

Old regime was divided into estates populatly known as :-

clergy, nobility and the final estate was made for landless labourers or sevants and other merchants.

  • Political power was widely spread among the estates.

  • Political power was only for the clerky and nobility estate, where Third estate had no power in hand and was only ought to follow the 1st and 2nd estate's commands.

  • Old regime lasted only till 1789 because of "French Revolution".

  • There was a revenue collection in the estates where only Third estates pay revenue and the other estates only adminstrated.

  • In this old regime another source of fiance was charging fees for holding state position.

  • The established principles of French monarchy was the king could not act without the advice of his council.
