During the period of nationalism in India, various social movements are very important.
- The Partition of Bengal in 1905 laid the foundation of the revolutionary philosophies and movement. It was Aurobindo Ghosh, his brother Barin Ghosh, Bhupendranath Datta, Lal Bal Pal and Subodh Chandra Mullick who initiated the revolutionary activity against the tyrant British rule.
- Religious reforms started in Bombay in 1840 by the Parmahans Mandali which aimed at fighting idolatry and the caste system. Perhaps the earliest religious reformer in western India was Gopal Hari Deshmukh, known popularly as 'Lokahitwadi', who wrote in Marathi.
- The three main nineteenth-century social reform movements – abolition, temperance, and women's rights – were linked together and shared many of the same leaders. Its members, many of whom were evangelical Protestants, saw themselves as advocating for social change in a universal way.
