                    Should women join the armed forces?

Good morning everyone present here. Distinguished guests, learned jury, and my dear fellow students, I stand here to speak on ‘Should women join the armed forces?’  

I am reminded of Gloria Steinem’s words: “A gender-equal society would be one where the word 'gender' does not exist: where everyone can be themselves.” Not letting someone do what she wants to do is limiting her freedom. If still there are limitations, I just wonder why there is so much ado about gender-equality campaigns in our society.  

I strongly believe women are perfectly suitable armed forces. Recently women fighter pilots, Avani Chaturvedi, Mohana Singh Jitarwal, and Bhawana Kanth were commissioned in the Indian Air Force. Wing Commander Shaliza Dhami became the first woman officer with permanent commission in the Indian Air Force. Similarly, in army and navy also more and more women are proving their worth.  

I strongly believe, women can do, be, and have anything that they wish. So, they should join armed forces.

In the past society, there is a lot of discrimination over women. They were seen as no way superior to men in all the aspects.  In the present-day society the discrimination is decreasing day by day even through in some areas there is a lot of restrictions for women.

Example 1. In College hostels girls were allowed up to a limited whereas there won’t be any restrictions for boys. Not allowing woman to join armed forces would also comes as this kind of discrimination. So, in order to avoid gender discrimination towards women there should always be same restrictions for men as well as women. So that we can eliminate this discrimination in society.
