The plant body consisted of a main stem, which was slender and jointed, rarely exceeding 5 mm in diameter. ... The stem was ribbed which did not alternate at nodes. Leaves which are so typical of Sphenophyllum were present in clusters at the nodal regions. At each whorl the number of leaves ranged from 6 to 9.
