The ancient Indian art was basically inspired by religion, spiritualism, myths and mystical relationship between God and man.

Since Indus valley civilization we see the presence of religion and spirituality in Indian art. The finding of Shiva Pashupatti seal and other findings in Harrappan sites testify it. Similarly during the Second Urbanization and later the art was inspired by Buddhism. Various portraits of Buddha and Buddhism related things dominated the art. Rock-cut cave architecture was started by Buddhism and it inspired the Hindus and Jains. Ajanta Rocket-cut caves and paintings testify the same.

The theme of Gandhara School of Art was also religious and spirituality. Buddha and Buddhism related things were represented in art like statue of Headless Buddha etc.

Mostly art and sculptures of various Buddhist and Hindu Gods and Goddesses and mythical figures dominated the art of Ancient India.
