Taxila was located at the junction of South Asia and Central Asia. The ruins found at Taxila belong to Achamenid Empire, Mauryan and other successive kingdoms. Due to its strategic location empires tried to control it and it became insignificant when the trade routes connecting these regions lost their importance. Its ruins were discovered by archaeologist Alexander Cunningham.

According to some accounts it was one of the earliest universities in the world. Students  from around the would studied here until it was destroyed in 5th century. At its height is was well known centre of higher education. It had law school, military school, medical school and school of military science.  Chanakya, Paninini and Charaka were the notable people who studied at this university.
