This chapter traces the dramatic and unexpected emergence of Mahatma Gandhi on the political scene in India in 1919–20. Gandhi initially hovered on the periphery of nationalist politics and later focused on the fight for freedom. However, even before he came out against the Rowlatt Bills in February 1919, Gandhi’s relations with the government had practically reached a breaking point. They considered Gandhi’s satyagraha as a serious challenge to the British rule and it was denounced by almost all the prominent politicians of the day. This chapter explores how Gandhi managed to overcome opposition and came to dominate the Indian National Congress for the next quarter of a century.
