Brazil is not very densely populated. With a population density of 24.28 per km², it ranks 81st in population density among the one hundred most populous countries in the world, sitting between Peru and Chile, two other South American countries. Contrast that figure to India's population density of 398.12 per km². For the sake of comparison, note that the United States has a population density of 33.06 people per km², Sweden of 22 people per km², and Mexico of 62 people per km². (List of countries and territories by population density - Wikipedia)
The Brazilian population is disproportionately distributed across the country’s large territory. The most densely populated state (not considering the Federal District) is Rio de Janeiro with 376 people per km². In contrast, Amazonas has only 2.5 people per km² with an area that is about 36 times as large as Rio’s. The larger part of the population lives near the coast, and the south of the country is considerably more populated than the north. (List of Brazilian states by population density - Wikipedia)
