Andrea took a little sodium hydroxide in a beaker and dipped a red litmus paper into it.
She observed red litmus paper turned blue.

She took dilute hydrochloric acid in the same beaker and dipped a blue litmus paper into it. The
blue litmus paper did not turn red. Why?

Answer:

that's because hcl reacted with the sodium hydroxide present in the beaker

and what's left in the beaker is

nacl and h2o

which are neutral

Answer:

Because litmus paper is a acid- base indicator. The base reacts with red litmus paper and turn it blue and vice- versa...

I hope this must have helped you....
