Explanation:

The plants that grow in deserts or in very dry places where there is the scarcity of water are called xerophytes. Examples- cactus, asparagus, agave, euphorbia and yucca.

Xerophytic adaptations are as follows:

(1) Extensive root systems which go deep into the soil in search of water.

(2) Roots have numerous root hairs to absorb water.

(3) Leaves are reduced, small, scale-like.

(4) Leaves are modified into spines as in cactus.

(5) Leaves are coated with cuticle to check loss of water.

Smaller Leaves and stems

One of the chief adaptation of plant life to desert climate has been to reduce leaf and stem size.

This allows the plant to concentrate its water instead of spreading it out over a wider surface area. Deserts trees and shrubs tend to be short, with fewer leave and branches.
