The Androecium is composed of Stamens.

  • The Androecium is the male reproductive organ of a flower.
  • The individual unit of this part is known as stamens.
  • Stamen is made of two units: a long filament and a bi-lobed structure called an anther which is terminally attached to the tip of the filament.
  • Anther consists of 4 microsporangia/pollen sacs, surrounded by 4 cell wall layers such as epidermis, endothecium, middle layer and tapetum from outermost to innermost layer respectively.
  • The Mature anther contains archesporial cells that ultimately undergo meiosis to form microspores.
  • The microspores then divide mitotically to form pollen grain/male gametophyte.
  • When mature, pollens are liberated out of the sac via different dehiscence methods.
