The element in 2nd group and 3rd period is Magnesium Mg. It is an alkali metal.  Its valency is clearly +2.

It has electronic configuration :  1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2

             2 Mg + O₂   ==> 2 Mg O (s)

   Magnesium Oxide dissolves sparingly in water to produce Magnesium Hydroxide (or Magnesia).  Magnesium Oxide is very stable as Mg and Oxygen atoms are strongly bonded.

           2 Mg O (s) + H₂O (l)  ==> 2 Mg (OH)₂ (s)

Oxygen:  z = 16 .     1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p4

                           . .
                Mg  : : O :           Mg = O

Answer:

e

Explanation:

The element in 2nd group and 3rd period is Magnesium Mg. It is an alkali metal.  Its valency is clearly +2.

It has electronic configuration :  1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2

            2 Mg + O₂   ==> 2 Mg O (s)

          2 Mg O (s) + H₂O (l)  ==> 2 Mg (OH)₂ (s)

Oxygen:  z = 16 .     1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p4

                          . .

               Mg  : : O :           Mg = O
