In the given question,

Angles x and y form a Linear pair.

So, x + y = 180° ---- [Equation 1]

It is already given that:

x + 2y = 290° ---- [Equation 2]

For finding out the value of x or y, eliminate the either variable by using Elimination method.

Here to eliminate the x term subtract Equation 1 from Equation 1.

[Equation 2] - [Equation 1]

x + 2y = 290°

{-} x + y = 180°

y = 110°

∴ The value of y = 110°

EXTRA INFORMATION:

If the value of x was also asked, then just substitute the value of x in any one of the Equation.

Let's substitute in Equation 1.

x + y = 180°

→ x + 110 = 180°

→ x = 70°

x = 70°

Answer:

 \boxed{ \color{red} \sf \: The  \: value \:  of \:  y \:  is -110.}

Step-by-step explanation:

We know that linear pair of angles added upto 180 degrees.

As per given , we have

 \sf \: x+y=180 (Because x and y forms a linear pair) __________ (1)

and  \sf \: x+2y=290 __________ (2)

Subtract (1) from (2) , we get

 \sf \: x - 2y - x - y = 290 - 180

 ⟹ \boxed{ \color{red} \sf \:  y \:  = -110.}

☞ Hence, the value of y is -110.
