- Anhydrous Aluminium Chloride (Al₂Cl₆) is covalent compound and soluble in water to give [AlCl₂ (H₂O)₄]⁺ and [AlCl₄ (H₂O)₂]⁻ ions.
- Anhydrous Aluminium chloride is hygroscopic in nature and having a very pronounced affinity for water.
- It fumes in moist air and produce some kind of sound when mixed with liquid water as the Cl− ions are displaced with H₂O molecules in the lattice to form the hexahydrate molecule.
- That hexahydrate molecule breaks to give [AlCl₂ (H₂O)₄]⁺ and [AlCl₄ (H₂O)₂]⁻ ions.
- Anhydrous aluminium chloride directly not dissolves in water but it gives some kind of reaction and changes into hexahydrate form to get soluble in water.
