Anil and Deepa are good friends, and they have something in common. They both are
promoted within their respective organizations to management positions. Each of them found
the transition a challenge.
Anil realized that no longer he will be able to participate in the water cooler gossip or shrug
off an employee’s chronic lateness. In attempt to be effective and well received in his new role
he worked like a bulldozer, knocking everyone over (a very bossy attitude). But to his dismay he
was not well received. He was on the crossroad thinking what to do.
Deepa on the other hand, was in no better situation. She suddenly found herself in a position
where she was giving directives to her peers who were not ready to be as open with her as they
were when she was one of them. In her effort of not to offend them she was extremely polite
and had laissez-faire attitude with her now subordinates. To her frustration she too found that
she was also not well received and was not as effective as she expected herself to be. Though
few of her teammates worked according to her wishes.
Both Deepa and Anil, on an analysis, found that they have different type of people in their
command group- some were motivated to work but did not know what to do and how to do,
some were skilled and motivated, some were well versed with how to perform the task but
were not ready to follow the directives. Further they realized that their current style was
effective with few but not with others.
Considering Hersey and Blanchard’s approach what suggestion would you give to both Anil
and Deepa to increase their effectiveness in a leader’s role
