He made money by fits and start. Fits and Starts means not working on something steadily and constantly. And in this story, Anil made money by doing various activities that did not assure him a consistent income stream.

Infact, he used to borrow this week and lend the next week. He used to live paycheck by paycheck. And even if he received the money, he used to spend them qucikly with his friends. Hence, Anil indeed made money by fits and start.
