Let the time taken by Varun to finish a piece of work be x days.

 

Then the time taken by Anil to complete the same work = x - 6

 

Time taken if they work together = 4 days

 

Thus, we have

 



Now, x = 2 is rejected since x - 6 = 2 - 6 = -4 which cannot be number of days.

Hence, x = 12

 

Hence, time taken by Varun to complete the work independently is 12 days.
