- Change of spectral band position of a molecule to a lower wavelength (higher frequency) is called hypsochromic shift (blue shift).
- Unshared pair of electrons on N of aniline is not available for delocalization from double band.
- This causes removal of conjugation.
- Hence, spectral band of aniline lies at 280 mμ, but in acidic medium it shifts to 203 mμ.
