Heya...
Its because of simple reason, that is the survival. Their body evoluted itself with fat just to keep the fish and polar animals warm and living as the temperature of water may fall down to 0 or below 0° C as well. Probably one more thing helps them in the cold, that is the ice itself. YUP.. ice freezes over the lakes or ponds keeping the inside warm, only a little warm....
