Animals eat a lot before hibernating because when they hibernate_during extreme conditions_they do not hibernate for a short period of time; they hibernate for 6-7months (like black bears) which is quite a long period. To survive this period, they need a lot of energy. They can't move in search of food since the conditions are extreme. So they have to store food inside their bodies _before such conditions_ which gives them energy to survive the extreme periods.
