The explantion given by her would be:: Since carbon has valency of 4 so either it can lose 4 electrons or gain 4 electron but if it loses 4 electrons then it would require a large amount of energy to remove those 4 electrons or if it has to gain 4 electrons than the nucleus of the atom cannot bear that much weightage on it.
