Anne referred to 26th July as a tumultuous day because a siren had gone off in the morning while the annex members were at breakfast signalling the plane crossing the coast. The unmistakable smell of fire spread everywhere and the city seemed to have been enveloped in a thick fog. But after dinner time, there was another gun-fire round and swarms of planes. The air was buzz with the drone of engines. Nobody was able to sleep that night because it repeated again at midnight.
