A body of mass 100 kg stands on a spring weighing machine inside a lift. The lift starts to
ascend with acceleration of 2.2 m s-2. What is the reading of the machine?​

Given:-

  • Mass ,m = 100 kg
  • Acceleration ,a = 2.2 m/s²

To Find:-

  • Reading of Machine.

Solution:-

As we have to calculate the weight reading by the machine .

As we know that the acceleration due to gravity (g) is 9.8m/s². The ball is falling down on the earth's surface .

Therefore, the combine acceleration

• a' = a + g.

where,

  • g denote acceleration due to gravity
  • a denote ascend with acceleration.

→ a' = 2.2 + 9.8

→ a' = 12 m/s²

Hence, the combined acceleration is 12m/s²

Now, calculating the reading of spring

→ Reading of Machine = m × a'/g

→ Reading of Machine = 100×12/9.8

→ Reading of Machine = 1200/9.8

→ Reading of Machine = 122.44 kg

  • Hence, the reading of Machine is 122.44 kg.

Solution :-

At first let's find total acceleration

Total Acceleration = Acceleration + Acceleration due to gravity

Total Acceleration = 2.2 + 9.8

Total Acceleration = 12.0 m/s

Now,

Finding Reading of Machine

Reading of machine = mass × Total Acceleration/Acceleration due to gravity

Reading of machine = 100 × 12/9.8

Reading of machine = 1200/9.8

Reading of machine = 122.44 kg
