Solid, liquids and gases differ in respect of volume and shape because there is difference between their intermolecular force of attraction between their molecules. Solids have most intermolecular force of attraction so they attain us specific volume and size whereas liquid has less intermolecular force of attraction so they attend the size of container whereas gases have least intermolecular force of attraction so the expand to the space given to them, hence gas has no fixed volume and shape.
