HELLO THERE!
Your picture is not clear, still I believe, that if someone really wants to help someone, then an unclear picture is no barrier.
Your question: Write a brief sketch of Nerissa and indicate the importance of her role in the play.
Here's your answer:
Nerissa is Portia's lady-in-waiting and also works as a foil to Portia, just as Gratiano is to Bassanio. She is always there with Portia and assists her in all her plans. Similar to her mistress, she is young and possesses great common sense. Her mentality is similar to that of Portia and therefore she could work as an extreme confidant to Portia.
She shows similar dislike for the Prince of Arragon and other suitors as that of Portia and she is the one who says that a noble man like Bassanio would suit Portia the best. When Portia cross dresses to become the doctor of Law to go to Venice to save Antonio's life from the clutches of the Jew, Shylock, Nerissa does the same to be her clerk which shows that she is a confident lady who can handle difficult situations like that of her mistress.
From that point of view, it can be easily assumed that she is not merely a passive character in the play. She has indeed a greater role to play.
She too is of romantic disposition as we see her falling in love with Bassanio's friend, Gratiano at the very first sight.
Nerissa often encourages her lady, Portia, when the latter is in melancholy. She has a good sense of humour too. She cleverly imitates Portia's actions and gives the ring to Gratiano and tells him never to part with it. Similarly, after the trial scene, she gets her ring from Gratiano.
THANKS!
Hope my answer is satisfactory.
