X+ 1/X = 3
squaring both sides
(X +1/X ) ^ 2 = 9
X ^2 + (1/X ) ^ 2 + 2*X *1/X = 9
X ^2 + (1/X ) ^2 +2 = 9
x^2 +(1/X) ^2 = 7
now
X ^3 +( 1/X )^ 3 = ( X + 1/X ) ( x^2 + 1/ X ^2 - X *1/X )
= (3) ( 7-1 ) = 3*6 = 18
