when the side is doubled the area becomes 4 times original area.

when side is halved the area becomes 1/4th the original area .
let the original side be a cm
now original area = a^2 cm^2
now on doubling the side
side becomes
2a
therefore area = 4a^2 cm^2
thus it becomes 4 times


when side is halved
side becomes a/2
therefore area = a^2/4 cm^2 thus it becomes 1/4 th
