The airline flew domestically within Australia and from the 1990s to destinations in Asia.[1] After 65 years of operation, the airline was taken into administration in 2001 as a result of the financial collapse and the subsequent liquidation of the company charter in 2002. The last flight landed on 5 March 2002.

Reginald "Reg" Ansett founded the company in 1935 as Ansett Airways Pty Ltd. It was an offshoot of his road transport business which became so successful that it threatened the freight and passenger income of the Victorian Railway. This prompted the state government to enact the Private Truck Operators Prohibition Act. Reg Ansett responded by creating an airline because aviation was controlled by the federal government and was beyond the power of the state government.
