How are the lungs designed in human beings to maximise the area for exchange of gases??

  • Respiration in human beings takes place through a special system called as respiratory system. This involves nostrils, nasal cavity, larynx, bronchi, bronchioles ending in alveoli inside the lungs. Lungs are designed in such a way that they are lined by a thin membrane to facilitate the exchange of gases.
  • Bronchi and bronchioles are the parts of respiratory system located in the lungs.

Why is it necessary to separate oxygenated and deoxygenated blood in mammals and birds.

  • Mammals and birds are animals which can be called warm-blooded animals.
  • Warm-blooded animals have the characteristic that they can produce body heat, even if it is cold outside.
  • It is necessary that the oxygenated and Deoxygenated blood is separated so that the body does not generate excessive heat due to excessive production of carbon dioxide.

What are the components of the transport system in highly organised plants?

  • 1. WSM (Water, Salts and Minerals) are transported by Xylem tissues with the help of Tracheids and Vessels from roots to other parts of plants.
  • 2. Food is transproted by Phloem tissues with the help of Sieve tubes and Companion Cells from leaves to other parts of plant.

1••••

Lungs are two soft spongy structures lodges in the thoracic cavity .Each lung is enclosed in a double walled sac called pleura. In the lungs ,the air passage divides into smaller tubes called bronchi which in turns from bronchioles later terminates in ballon like structure called alveoli. the presence of alveoli in the lungs provides a very large area for the exange of gases and this availability of large surface area maximises the exchange of gases. the alveoli have very thin walls and contains an extensive network of blood vessels to facilitate exchange of gases.

2••••

Mammals and birds are warm blooded animals. they constantly use energy to maintain their body temperature. they have higher energy need and so they requires more oxygen to produce energy. thus, it is important that their oxygenated blood does not get mixed up with deoxygenated blood.

3•••

The components of the transport system of highly organised plants consists of xylem and phloem.

●Xylem consists of ----
•tracheids
•vessels
•xylem parenchyma
•xylem fibres

●Phloem consists of--
•Sieve tubes
•companion cells
•phloem fibres
•phloem parenchyma
