Each phrase is taken from a different story, thus the four answers are -
(a) John's wife became upset with him because she had suspected him of being unfaithful. She felt he and one of her club mates were cheating on her. And she decided to go back to the house of her parents, and told John in writing that her lawyer would eventually speak with him.
(b) The poet threw a log at the snake as a strange sense of fear seized him. The reasonable being inside him was warning him that the snake was a threatening thing, and so his instinctive reaction was to pick up a log and clumsily hurl it at the snake, conceding to the voice of his upbringing.
(c) There was a major upheaval in the skies on the day of Caesar's death which suggested that something bad was going to happen. Calpurnia thought of Caesar's statue, and saw blood gushing from it like a fountain. A lioness on the street gave birth to her cubs and the tombs opened to reveal the dead. Perhaps this was seen as a bad omen, signifying the death of Caesar in the near future.
(d) The large icebergs around the mariner's ship broke and separated after the albatross landed on their ship allowing the helmsman to navigate them out of the sea. Then a favourable southwind started blowing and the atmosphere improved significantly. The seafarers welcomed the albatross as a good Christian spirit that had come to rescue them.
