i) the question has been asked from the story on the face of it.
- In the story, Derry is described as a disheartened and disappointed young boy who suffered a misfortune when his face was eaten by acid.
- He developed a complex and pessimistic attitude towards life through the response which he received from people after seeing his face. He's stubborn and reserved. He doesn't trust people to be his friends and begins to think that, except his mum, no one will ever love him.
- On the other hand, Mr Lamb is not encouraging his illness to come his way. He's developed a good attitude to life.
- With kids mocking him and making fun of him, he holds his door open, so that anyone who wants to meet him can come. He tells Derry he's having friends all over.
