  1. Rajkumar Shukla was a poor and emaciated peasant from Champaran. In the annual Congress party session held at Lucknow, he came to complain about the injustices of the landlord system in Bihar. He met Gandhi, introduced himself and told him that he had come to take him there to help the poor share croppers.
  2. Everywhere he went, he was chased away. But Edla treated him as if he was really the captain, with so much care and affection. She allowed him to spend a christmas eve on her home giving him home like feel for once in a year. This treatment and her politeness changed his mind and converted him into a good man.
  3. That day, Franz noticed the absence of the routine commotion caused by the opening and closing of desks, repeating of lessons in unison and rapping of M. Hamel's ruler on the table. The usual hustle - bustle was replaced by a unusual stillness. It seemed like school on sunday morning.
