It was the time when Helen felt her soul sudden awakening. She explored everything with her hands and learnt the name of every object that she touched. It opened up a wonderful world for her. The more she explored, the happier and confident she grew with rest of the world. She learnt how the sun and rain grow out of the ground. She experienced the two aspects of the nature. She could understand the joy of nature. She came very close to nature and had nice thoughts and sweet dreams under the tree of paradise. Ms. Sullivan unfolded the beauty of nature for Helen with the passage of time. She took her to the bank of the Tennessee River. There she had her first lesson in the beneficence of nature, i.e., how every tree is pleasant to the sight and good for food; how birds build their nests. She could now appreciate how the squirrel, the deer, the lion and every other could find food and shelter. Miss Sullivan helped her in understanding the mysteries of nature.

Helen was a very bright and happy child. She attracted everyone's attention towards her with her mischiefs. In her childhood, she was an eager and self-asserting child. She imitated everyone and learnt walking as well as talking at an early age. She was the first baby in her family so she received the love and affection of her family members to the maximum. Helen herself wrote 'I came, I saw, I conquered' as the first baby in the family does. She started walking when she was one year old. Her mother had just taken her out of the bath-tub and was holding her in her lap when she started walking towards the leaves that danced in the sunlight. Even her naming ceremony was a big event. She was not to be lightly named being the first baby in the family. She imitiated every one and learnt talking at an early age. Everyone got attracted towards her due to these qualities.

26th July was a tumultuous day. It was full of tension and fright. The first warning siren was sent off in the morning but nobody paid any attention to it because it only meant that the planes were crossing the coast. It was only around two in the afternoon when the sirens went again. Both the sisters went upstairs. After five minutes they heard the gun shots which were very loud. Their house shook and the bombs kept falling. After half an hour, the drone of engines faded and life became normal. When they looked outside it seemed as if the city was enveloped in thick fog. At dinner time, there was another air raid alarm. Nothing happened after that but after dinner, there was another air raid warning, gun-fire and swarms of planes. The bombs rained down. Schilphol Airport was bombed. The planes dived and climbed. The air was abuzz with the drone of engines. Nobody slept for the large part of the night as all that started again at midnight.
