Helen was a determined girl. She learns to speak tirelessly and then realize her dream sooner than expected. Her desire to learn and improve helped her in its realization. (She provided minute details so that the normal persons could realize her special handicaps and peculiar problems). The impulse to utter audible sounds had always been strong to her. Before her illness, she was learning fast to speak. Even after illness, she wanted to use her lips and voice like any other normal person. With the help of Mrs. Fuller, Principal of the Horace Mann School, she eagerly imitated every motion and in an hour, learnt six elements of speech M, P, A, S, T, I. After taking just eleven lessons from her, Helen spoke her first connected sentence. Then there was no stopping. She worked hard, sometimes gave up in despair but soon started again, ultimately with the help of Miss Sullivan and Miss Fuller, returned home, being able to speak.

Helen had a younger sister called Mildred. Before her birth, Helen was the darling daughter of her parents. But with the arrival of Mildred, she had ceased to be so. As a result, she started treating Mildred as an intruder. The thought of Mildred receiving more love from her mother filled Helen with jealousy. Mildred took her place in her mother’s lap and took all the care and time of her mother which was not acceptable to Helen. Her jealousy reached its height when Helen saw Mildred sleeping peacefully in her doll’s cradle. She got angry and showed her anger by overturning the cradle. It was only her mother’s timely intervention that saved her from falling. With the passage of time, this jealousy turned into an affectionate relationship. The signs of bonding could be seen very clearly. Mildred could not understand her sign language yet an understanding and love grew between both of them. The affection grew into their hearts and they went hand in hand wherever they went.

Anne felt herself fortunate to have the annexe as the hiding place rather than staying in the concentration camps or in houses. They used to get everything in their hiding place, e.g., food, books, family support, etc. She valued the kindness and generosity of her father’s non-Jewish colleagues who risked their lives to provide them with food and supplies.
Anne sometimes felt bad about the miserable physical and emotional condition of the annexe. However, when she compared her deprived freedom with her Jewish friends, and family members who had probably been arrested and sent to concentration camps, such as her friend Hanneli, she was extremely thankful for still being alive.

Gestapo handled the Jews in a very inhumane way. According to the entries made by Anne, the Jews were taken to a big camp where they got almost nothing to eat and much less to drink as water was available only for one hour a day. There was only one toilet and sink for several thousand people. The heads of women and children were often shaved off.
Gestapo treated in a very harsh and cruel way. Mr. Alfred Dussel told the residents of the secret annexe that many Jews had been taken to a dreadful fate. Every night, the grey green military vehicles cruised the streets and knocked every door asking for the Jews. If the Jews were found there, they were immediately taken away from that place, exactly like slave-hunting of old days. The Jews found were bullied and beaten until they nearly dropped. They were so cruel that they didn’t even spare the sick, the elderly, babies or the pregnant women. They all were supposed to march to their death.
