Helen had great love for mischief's. One day she put her wet apron over hot ashes. She made a terrified noise and was rescued by her old nurse, Vinny. Helen learns the lesson of safety. She once locked up her mother in the pantry for three hours. In order to teach her, her parents appointed a teacher, Ms. Sullivan, but Helen sought an opportunity and locked her in the room. Then she hid the key under a wardrobe in the hall and her father had to get a ladder and take Ms. Sullivan out through the window. She was delighted by that. It made her to learn how to find out the way to get out of trouble.

Mildred Keller was Helen’s younger sister. Before she was born Helen used to get all the attention of her parents. But with Mildred’s birth, things changed a bit and Helen became jealous of her but at later stages both of them became very close to each other. Mildred was an alert and observant child. Once, they were at Earn Quarry. They went out to gather persimmons and got lost in woods. It started getting dark but they were unable to find their way back home. On the way, Mildred observed a trestle and realized that it was a short cut to their home. So, they all started walking on the path. Suddenly, she saw a train moving towards them. She alerted Helen and both of them were lucky enough to climb down in time. The train zoomed past them. It was only Mildred’s alertness which averted something horrible.

On Oct 20, 1942, Anne and the other residents of the annex got frightened when a person came to fill the fire extinguishers. Perhaps he was a carpenter. The office staff forgot to inform them. But somehow, Anne could make it when she heard the hammering on the landing. After about 15 minutes, the carpenter put his hammer and some other tools on the bookcase and banged the door. They turned white with fear presuming that someone had got suspicious about someone living in that place. The knocking, pulling, pushing and jer-king at the door continued for some time. Anne fainted out of fear that someone had discovered their wonderful hiding place. But it was only Mr. Kleiman asking to open the door.

Miep Gies was a close friend of Franks, as she worked in Otto Frank’s company. Her husband Jan and she herself helped the Franks a lot when they were preparing to shift to the secret annex. They used to stuff their belongings in bags and pockets and took them to their hiding place. Most of the times she used to smuggle food for them in the annex. She even baked cakes for them on special occasions. In other words, she turned out to be a good friend of the Franks who helped them in their hour of need. Miep often visited the secret annex and brought them the news from the outside and of course a breathe of fresh air too whenever she came. Since, Anne didn’t have any friend, she sometimes found a good friend in Miep. Miep always tried her best to make the situation of the person hiding in the annex a little more comfortable.
