(7)

Let, the two numbers are x and y with x > y

By the given conditions,

2 (x - y) = y + 1

or, 2x - 2y = y + 1

or, 2x = 3y + 1 .....(i)

2 (x - y) = x - 2

or, 2x - 2y = x - 2

or, x = 2y - 2 .....(ii)

Putting x = 2y - 2 in (i), we get

2 (2y - 2) = 3y + 1

or, 4y - 4 = 3y + 1

or, 4y - 3y = 1 + 4

or, y = 5

Putting y = 5 in (ii), we get

x = 2 (5) - 2

or, x = 10 - 2

or, x = 8

Therefore, the two numbers are 8 and 5

(8)

Let, the two numbers are x and y

By the given conditions,

  • 4x + 3y = 100 .....(i)
  • 3x + 4y = 96 .....(ii)

Multiplying (i) by 3 and (ii) by 4, we get

  • 12x + 9y = 300
  • 12x + 16y = 384

On subtraction, we get

7y = 84

or, y = 12

Putting y = 12 in (i), we get

4x + 3 (12) = 100

or, 4x + 36 = 100

or, 4x = 100 - 36 = 64

or, x = 16

Therefore, the two numbers are 16 and 12.
