In the square ABCD,

  • AB = 20 cm,
  • E is the mid point of BC,

∴ BE = ½(BC) = ½(20 cm) = 10 cm

We know,

Pythagoras theorem:

c² = a² + b²

[relation b/w hypotenuse and base, height of a right triangles.]

∴ in △ABE,

(AE)² = (AB)² + (BE)²

⟹ (AE)² = (20)² + (10)² = 400 + 100 = 500

⟹ AE = √500 = 22.36... cm.

∴ The answer will be 22.3 cm.
