Answer:

2 (a) Greatest Rf = 17 N

Least Rf = 7 N

2 (b) Rf = √ 144i + 25j (In the x-y plane)

Explanation:

(a) We find the greatest and least possible resultant force by the following ways:-

We know that the greatest possible resultant force is obtained by adding the given forces. So,

Greatest Rf = 12 + 5

= 17 N

We also know that the least possible resultant force is obtained by subtracting the smaller force from larger one. So,

Least Rf = 12 - 5

= 7 N

(Note; Rf represents resultant force)

(b) Let the forces be f1 and f2 and let them act perpendicular to each other. Then, their resultant force is given by the hypotenuse of their triangle formed. So,

Rf^2 = 12i^2 + 5j^2

Rf = √ 12i^2 + 5j^2

Rf = √ 144i + 25j

|Rf| = 13 units.

Hope it helps :-))
