 \sf \bigstar \: Topic :-

Addition of fractions

In this topic, we discuss about the correct method of adding fractions. To add fractions we may follow these simple steps :-

1. Convert the fractions into like terms

  • We need to find out the L.C.M of the denominator and then multiply the numerator and denominator of the both the numbers such that the denominators become alike. Now, since the denominators are same, therefore, they are like terms.

2. Add them

  • Now since the denominator are alike it's easy for us to add them. Thus we will add them

3. Convert into simple terms

  • We will convert them into simple terms by canceling. And we're done.

Solution :-

We have been provided that :-

  • Shivani bought 2/5 m of ribbon

  • Lakshmi bought 3/4 m of ribbon

To Find out :-

  • The total measurement of total ribbon bought

Calculations :-

The L.C.M. of 5 and 4 is 20. Therefore, converting them into like terms, we get :-

 \sf \hookrightarrow \:  \dfrac{2}{5}  =  \dfrac{2 \times 4}{5 \times 4}  =  \dfrac{8}{20}

Now, for second term, we have :-

 \\  \sf \hookrightarrow \:  \dfrac{3}{4}  =  \dfrac{3 \times 5}{4 \times 5}  =  \dfrac{15}{20}  \\

Now, since they have been converted into like terms, we will just add them, therefore :-

 \\  \sf \hookrightarrow \:  \frac{8}{20} +  \frac{15}{20}  \:  \:   \\  \\ \sf \hookrightarrow \:  \frac{8 + 15}{20}  \:  \:  \:   \:  \:   \:  \\  \\  \sf \hookrightarrow \:  \frac{23}{20}  = 1 \frac{3}{20}
