Hi..
Reduction reffers to having the no of chromosomes half..ie- there are 46 chromosomes in somatic cell but in gametes it reduces down to 23..
Gametes must be produced by reductional division as after fusion they become 46 chromosomes ..if not the no of chromosomes in progeny would be 92...causing abnormalaties....
