Acids are ionic compounds that produce positive hydrogen ions (H+) when dissolved in water. Acids taste sour, conduct electricity when dissolved in water, and react with metals to produce hydrogen gas. Certain indicator compounds, such as litmus, can be used to detect acids. Acids turn blue litmus paper red.The activity describing the effect of acid on metal carbonates and metal bicarbonates is : ... Pour few drops of Sulphuric acid in both the Test Tubes. You will notice evolution of a colourless gas. Pass the evolved gas in both the test tube through lime water, with the help of delievery tube.Acid rain is a rain or any other form of precipitation that is unusually acidic, meaning that it has elevated levels of hydrogen ions (low pH). It can have harmful effects on plants, aquatic animals, and infrastructure. Acid rain is caused by emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide, which react with the water molecules in the atmosphere to produce acids. Some governments have made efforts since the 1970s[1] to reduce the release of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide into the atmosphere with positive results. Nitrogen oxides can also be produced naturally by lightning strikes, and sulfur dioxide is produced by volcanic eruptions.[2] Acid rain has been shown to have adverse impacts on forests, freshwaters, and soils, killing insect and aquatic life-forms, causing paint to peel, corrosion of steel structures such as bridges, and weathering of stone buildings and statues as well as having impacts on human health.[3]

Ans1 :- physical Properties of acids :-

1. Sour in taste

2. Turn blue litmus solution to red , methyl orange to red

3. Most of the acids are corrosive in nature.

4. They produce a burning sensation on the skin.

Chemical properties of acids :-

1. Reaction with metals-When metals combine with acids , they form metal salts and hydrogen gas.

2. Reaction with metal carbonates- Acid combine with metal carbonates to produce matal salt , carbon dioxide and water.

3. Reaction with base- Acid react with metal to form salt and water. This reaction is called neutralisation reaction.

4. Reaction with metal oxides- Metal oxides like CaO , MgO , BeO are basic in nature . So , when they react with acid , salt and water will be produced .

Ans2 :- All metal carbonates and hydrogen carbonates react with acids to give a corresponding salt, carbon dioxide, and water. Thus, the reaction can be summarized as:

Metal carbonate/Metal hydrogen carbonate + Acid -> Salt + water + carbon dioxide

The activity describing the effect of acid on metal carbonates and metal bicarbonates is :

Take small amount of metal carbonate (Zinc Carbonate) in Test tube A and metal bicarbonate (Zinc hydrogen carnonate) in test tube B.

Pour few drops of Sulphuric acid in both the Test Tubes. You will notice evolution of a colourless gas.

Pass the evolved gas in both the test tube through lime water, with the help of delievery tube.

You will notice that, the lime water turns colorless, in both the cases. This indicates that the evolved gas id Carbon-di-oxide.

For example, zinc carbonate on reacting with sulphuric acid produces zinc sulphate, water, and carbon dioxide

Similarly, zinc hydrogen carbonate on reacting with sulphuric acid produces zinc sulphate, water, and carbon dioxide

Ans3 :- Acid rain is a rain that is unusually acidic due to the presence of acids such as sulphuric acid  (H2SO4) and nitric acid (HNO3). Rain is acidified by oxides of sulphur and nitrogen. Acid rain usually has a pH of less than 5.6. It is formed when pollutants such as oxides of sulphur and nitrogen (like sulphur dioxide, nitric oxide etc), contained in power plant smoke, factory smoke, and car exhaust, react with the moisture in the atmosphere to form sulphuric acid and nitric acid.

It can have harmful effects on plants, aquatic animals, and infrastructure. Following are the harmful effects of acid rain

  • Dissolves nutrients essential for plant growth

  • Causes respiratory ailments in humans

  • Affects aquatic ecosystem

  • Corrodes water pipes resulting in leaching of heavy metals in drinking water

  • Damage buildings made up of stone and metal
