The following first aid should be provided to victims of disasters: Airway: If a person faces difficulty in breathing, raise the chin or hold the head in backward sloping position, so as to keep the respiratory passage open. Circulation: If the person is unconscious, first give mouth to mouth respiration. Then, do the following:

  • Move the person into a shady, cool or air-conditioned space.
  • Call for emergency medical help.
  • Cover the person with damp sheets or spray cool water on his face. Direct air on the person with a fan or newspaper.
  • Make the person drink as much water as he can.
  • If the excess water has gone in the person stomach, try to get it out by compressing the chest properly.
  • Call for medical help, if situation is out of control.
  • If the person is bruised or fractured, put band aid on bruised part to cover the injury and if fractured, ask the person not to move and call for medical help.
  • If bleeding is taking place, hold a clean, preferably sterile, absorbent material over the injury and apply gentle yet direct pressure.Bleeding can also be reduced by holding the correct pressure points.
  • If the person is drowning, provide him/her with breath rescue and correct chest compression technique.
