(i) Map scale is important for accurate (depending on the map scale, the larger the scale the more accurate) measurements of distances and other related parameters (e.g. orientation and size of area) to ensure that you are locating or finding the correct Area of Interest (AOI).

(ii) Colors add the detail unique to a topographic map. Colors stand out from the map and provide identification to many features such as vegetation and water. Colors represent natural and man-made features of the earth. Coupled with contour lines, colors add fabric to the features and terrain.

(iii) There are two main types of horizontal or linear distance measurement.

(iv) 1. Topographic maps give the user the ability to view a three-dimensional landscape on a two-dimensional map.

2. One who is able to read a topo map can identify the elevation and location of valleys, peaks, ridges, and other land features.
