We know that haemoglobin is red coloured iron containing pigment which is present in our RBCs.

• Oxygen can tie with haemoglobin in a reversible manner to form oxyhaemoglobin.
• Binding of oxygen with haemoglobin is related to partial pressure.
• In the alveoli, High pO₂, low pCO₂ lesser H+ concentration and lower temperature, the factors are all favourable for the formation of oxyhaemoglobin, but in low pO₂, high pCO₂, high H+ concentration and higher temperature exist the factor is favourable for the dissociation of oxygen from the oxyhaemoglobin.
• When percentage saturation of haemoglobin with O₂ is plotted against the pO₂ is forms sigmoid curve which is also known as oxygen dissociation curve
