A vaccine trains the immune system so that in future, it can recognise and fight pathogens. These pathogens might be viruses, bacteria, etc. To gain that immunity against the disease, our immune system has to know the pathogen beforehand.

In order to do so, certain molecules of pathogens are introduced into the body so that the immune system can trigger a response against that pathogen and create an identification also known as antibody so that in future it can recognise the virus/bacteria and fight it.

It's like knowing an enemy before fighting so that you can be prepared for the time when that enemy actually attacks you.
