SOLUTION.

Initial velocity of mass m = u

final velocity of mass m = v

Initial velocity of mass M = 0

Final velocity of mass M = v

Apply law of conservation of momentum

mu + M(0) = (M+m)v

mu/(M+m) = v

IMPULSE ON A BODY IS ALWAYS EQUAL TO THE CHANGE IN MOMENTUM OF THE BODY.

initial momentum of mass M = 0

Final momentum of mass M = Mmu/(M+m)

Change in momentum = Mmu/(M+m)

IMPULSE = Mmu/(M+m)
