A cognizable offence is an offence in which the police officer as per the first schedule or under any other law for the time being in force, can arrest the convict without a warrant and can start an investigation without the permission of the court.

An FIR is a very important document as it sets the process of criminal justice in motion. It is only after the FIR is registered in the police station that the police takes up investigation of the case. Who can lodge an FIR? Anyone who knows about the commission of a cognizable offence can file an FIR.

In an FIR, the following details are noted down.

The date and approximate hour when the • crime was committed and reported.

The place where it occurred.

• The name and address of the complainant. The name and address of the suspect, if any.

• Description of the crime.

In case of theft, details of property stolen. The section of the law which applies to

the offence.
