valency

  • The valency of an element is a measure of its combining capacity with other atoms when it forms compounds or molecules.
  • The combining capacity, or affinity of an atom of a given element is determined by the number of hydrogen atoms that it combines with.
  • In methane, carbon has a valence of 4; in ammonia, nitrogen has a valence of 3; in water, oxygen has a valence of 2; and in hydrochloric acid, chlorine has a valence of 1. Chlorine, as it has a valence of one, can be substituted for hydrogen.

Molecular mass

  • The molecular mass is the mass of a given molecule: it is measured in daltons. Different molecules of the same compound may have different molecular masses because they contain different isotopes of an element.

Molar mass

  • The molar mass of a compound is defined as the mass of that compound divided by the amount of substance in that compound, measured in moles.
