Chemical reaction is the process in which the arrangement of atoms or molecules takes place.

A substance can take part in a reaction only when:

  • It is either able to lose or gain electrons.
  • It must have empty orbitals to store the electrons.

Sometimes, substances are formed by sharing of electrons where the energy required for a substance to lose or gain electrons is extremely high. So they form covalent bond through sharing of electrons.

So, When a chemical reaction takes place, The electrons of atoms and molecules are shared or transferred which completely changes the property of the substance formed, that's why the substances have very different chemical and physical properties as compared to its reactants.

There are two possible bonds,

Ionic Bond

It is formed when the electrons are directly transferred from an atom or molecule to another atom or molecule.

Covalent Bond

This bond is comparatively weaker than the ionic bond, well ofcourse there are some exceptions like Diamond. which has covalent among its atoms. It is formed by sharing of electrons.
