Usually, when you measure a distance in woodworking it is to transfer it to something else. So you might measure the size of a tenon to know how big a mortise to chop, or the width of a board so you know how big to cut the veneer.

If you do this by measuring with a ruler at both places, you have two opportunities to mis-measure either by misreading the ruler or be being fractionally off on marking.

On the other hand, if you record the distance using a divider and lock it down, you can bring it accurately to the second place and use its sharp points to mark the distance indisputably.
